Housing Matters to Recovery

It’s hard to build stability when you don’t have a safe place to land.

For someone working toward recovery, where they go at the end of the day matters. It’s difficult to focus on staying sober, finding a job, rebuilding relationships, or making it to appointments when you’re also wondering where you’re going to sleep that night.

And sometimes the only place available is the same environment you’re trying to leave behind.

That’s why housing is such an important part of recovery.

A safe place to live doesn’t solve everything. There is still work to do, relationships to rebuild, appointments to keep, and plenty of hard days along the way. But having a door that locks, a bed to sleep in, and a place to come home to creates something incredibly important: stability.

At F5 Project, we’ve seen what can happen when someone finally has that foundation underneath them. They can start thinking beyond tonight. They can make plans for next week, next month, and eventually, the life they want to build.

During Recovery Month, we talk a lot about the courage it takes to change your life. We should also talk about whether people have the basic things they need to make that change possible.

Housing is more than a roof.

Sometimes it’s the first place someone finally gets to exhale.

And sometimes it’s where moving forward begins.

F5 Project provides men and women’s transitional housing in Grand Forks, Fargo, Bismarck, and Minot.
