There Is Always Another Step Forward

As Recovery Month comes to a close, we keep thinking about something we see every day at F5 Project: recovery doesn’t end when September does.

The work continues tomorrow.

People will wake up and make another choice to keep going. Someone will walk into a new job for the first time. Someone will get the keys to a place of their own. Someone will call their peer instead of going back to an old pattern. Someone will have a really hard day and still make it through.

And someone will decide to try again.

That’s recovery.

This month, we’ve talked about peer support, care coordination, housing, second chances, and the small wins that don’t always get noticed. None of those things happen in isolation. They are pieces of something much bigger: helping people build lives where moving forward feels possible.

We also know that recovery belongs to the person doing the work. Our job isn’t to take that work away from them. It’s to walk alongside them, help remove barriers, celebrate the wins, offer accountability, and still be there when things get messy.

That’s Ugly Grace.

So as September ends, we’re celebrating everyone in recovery—whether today marks 20 years, 20 days, or another attempt at day one.

And we’re asking our community to keep showing up long after Recovery Month is over.

Hire someone who needs an opportunity. Open a door instead of closing one because of someone’s past. Learn about recovery and challenge the stigma that still surrounds it. Support the organizations and people doing this work every day. And when someone in your life is trying to build something different, remind them that they’re worth showing up for.

Recovery is possible, but none of us builds a life alone. Let’s be the kind of community where people have a real chance to move forward.
